Andy Murray: Go 6 steps ahead

Australian Open is one of the most popular and prestigious tournaments among the tennis tournament because of highest amount of prize money (680,000). This year’s Australian Open will stat next week. That is why, people are seeking more information about this world wide famous tournament.

The British No 1 Andy Murray, who is just 20 year old, has been seeded in ninth position for the next week’s Australian Open. He started playing Australian Open since2007 when he seeded at number 15th. Now, he is seeding reflects his current world ranking which he achieved following victory at the Qatar Open last week. He is preparing hard ahead of the first grand-slam event at the AAMI classic in Kooyong. He got win in 12 games out of 15. No one able to reach the final eight-man invitational event after both lost their opening round-robin matches yesterday. However, it was thought to his ideal preparation ahead of the next week’s Australian Open.

Ljubicic looked to stamp his authority on the contest after winning the first set in a close tie break raced to a 3-0 lead. However, Murray’s way of thinking is totally different. He thinks rushing the net more to take the advantage away from his opponents.

"I didn't have too much chances to do it in the first set, but when I got down to 3-0 in the second, I started coming in a lot and it worked well," Murray said.

May be he can make any miracle in this year’s Australian open and write his name as a champion in this year’s Australian Open tournament.

Marat Safin Starts Kooyong Classic with a Superb Win

Former world no. 1 Marat Safin started the year with an impressive performance with a superb 6-1 6-4 victory over Andy Murray in the first match of Kooyong Classic tournament. This is an exhibition tournament involving eight male players. The winner of Australian Open 2005 was not in his great form last year with a series of injury problems. However, he has come back in the court with an inspirational victory. Naturally, he will be happy to get some better performance in Australian Open 2008.

Guardian reported:

"I don't have high expectations because it's pressure I don't need at all," the giant Russian told reporters ahead of next week's Australian Open.

"If I manage not to break myself on the way, I think I'll be somewhere around top 20, and from there it is easy to think about top 10."

"For one month and a half, I've been practising hard, seven hours a day, so I think it should be paying off at the end of the day," he said. "I'm waiting, expecting something to come."

It shows that how much eager he is to take part in the Australian Open 2008 and get back his fitness. Yes, this is where the key of success lies. It does not matter how far he can go in Australian Open 2008. Rather, it is his determination and willingness needed for a possible revival in his tennis career. So, I will not be surprised if Marat Safin can repeat the Australian Open 2005 success this time around.

Jelena Dokic in Dilemma Over Australian Open 2008

It is a tough decision for Australian Jelena Dokic to decide. She was out of the court for last two years because of injury and personal problem. However, Jelena Dokic has come back to action with the ongoing Hobart International tournament. She has defeated Martina Mueller 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 to progress to the next round in the tournament.

The former world no. 4, however, was not given an wild card entry to take part in the upcoming Australian Open 2008. So, she has to go though a qualifying round to secure her place in the Australian Open. Now, the problem is that Tennis Australia will start qualifying round for the Australian Open 2008 this week. So, she has to decide if she continues in Hobart International or take part in the trial of Australian Open 2008.

Seattletimes reported:

Formerly ranked as high as fourth in the world, Dokic had to win three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw. The 24-year-old Australian has a potential problem — whether to continue playing in Hobart or try qualifying for next week's Australian Open in Melbourne.

Tennis Australia officials declined to offer Dokic a wild card into the main draw in Melbourne, and women's qualifying will start at Melbourne Park this week.

Well, I think, she should go for the Australian Open 2008 qualifying. She has lots of potential left in her and a grand slam will be the right stage to prove her worth once again. Jelena Dokic is just 24 years old and she still has plenty of years left ahead of her. Even if she can not make it to the Australian Open, she has nothing to lose.

Justine Henin Happy to be Back in Australian Open

Justine Henin has back to the Australian Open after her shocking retirement from the Australian Open 2006 final with a stomach upset. Then last year, she withdrew herself from Australian Open as she was going to some personal problems relating to breaking up her marriage. So, Australian Open 2008 is a tournament that she might have been waiting for.

The world no. 1 is now playing in the Sydney International and has already made it to the semi final, where she is due to face world no. 4 Ana Ivanovic. Now, Henin fans are waiting to see their favorite player again in Australian Open.

International Herald Tribune reported:

"I left Australia with a strange feeling two years ago and I wasn't here last year, so its a great feeling to be back again," she said.

"I feel really comfortable about what happened and I have no regrets. I was feeling so bad. I wasn't healthy enough to play that match. It's pretty tough in a Grand Slam when you're not 100 percent to take your chances and take the opportunity.

"I wanted this title so much so it was tough, but I don't have anything to prove to anyone. I'm here because I love tennis."

Getting a bye and a walkover does not mean the Belgium is in poor form. Justine Henin won 8 WTA titles last year along with two Grand slam singles titles. Henin won the only Australian Open title in 2004. So, she will definitely try her best to win her second Australian Open title this year. Let us see, how far Justine Henin can go in Australian Open 2008 tournament.

Andy Murray Suffered Kooyong Classic Exit Ahead of Australian Open 2008

Andy Murray has faced a shocking defeat to Marat Safin at the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open 2008. So, his preparation for the first grand slam of the year was not that much satisfactory, despite winning the Qatar Open last week last week. Well, he is the only top seed male player of Australian Open 2008 from United Kingdom.

IC Wales reported:

The Scot, winner of the Qatar Open last week, slipped to his first defeat of 2008 as he went down 6-1 6-4 in his opening match of the eight-man round-robin event.

After the match the world number nine told his website, www.andymurray.com: "It was quite tough conditions - it's pretty windy out there. I feel all right, just a little bit overtired. I didn't feel too great on the court but after a couple more days of practising and getting used to the conditions and getting over the jet lag, I'll be feeling much better."

The 20 year old, Andy Murray may not be top favorite for the Australian Open, but he has a great potential in him. Last year, he reached the fourth round of Australian Open. However, Murray is now more matured he was last time. He has gather experienced over the last one year and started the New Year winning the Qatar Open. So, the year 2008 can be a successful year for Andy Murray. Now, let us see if he comes up with better result in Australian Open this time around.

Top Ten Female Tennis Players of 2007

The year 2007 has gone. However, the success and failure of last year are still in the record books. Now, ahead of the first Grand Slam tournament of 2008, I have made a list of top ten female tennis players of the year 2007. I have made the list based on the performance of the players throughout the year. I gave preference to the consistency of the players while making the list. However, it is true that not all of you will agree with me on this list, but I believe, the list will satisfy most of you.

Justine Henin

Justine Henin was the most successful female tennis player in 2007. With two grand slam titles, this Belgian won 8 WTA tiles last year. The no. 1 ranked player, however, started the year with the breaking up her marriage which led her to withdraw from Australian Open 2007. It was thought initially that Justine Henin would not be back so soon in the court with her prime form.

This is where Justine Henin is different. Despite all the setbacks of personal life, she did not take much time to prove her mental strength winning the French Open 2007 title. However, she could not reach the final of Wimbledon being defeated in the semi final. Later on, she finished the year winning the second U.S. Open title. She has become the first female tennis player in WTA tour history to win over $5 million in a year. With seven grand slam singles titles, Justine Henin is now in her way to rise in another height.

Serena Williams

You can say, the year 2007 was the revival of Williams sisters. Specially, younger sister Serena Williams showed some impressive performances last year. After spending most of the time out of the court with injury in 2006, Serena Williams made a strong comeback winning Australian Open 2007 title. However, the world no. 7 could not continue such dominance rest of the year, but reached the quarter final of three other grand slam tournaments of the year. Besides, she also won a WTA title in Miami. She also came back in the top ten of WTA ranking this year.

Well, you may argue that the performance of Serena Williams was not as impressive as her prime times in 2002 and 2003. Yes, winning a grand slam and a WTA title in a year does not revel much for someone who has nine grand slam singles titles to her credit, but considering a tough time that Serena was going though, you have to say that the year 2007 was a revival of her career because there were many who had seen the end of her career.

Venus Williams

Venus Williams also spent an impressive year in 2007 with one Grand Slam and two WTA titles. However, the six grand slam singles title holder was not exactly in her prime form of 2000- 2003, but like her sister, Venus Williams also recovered from a tough time in 2007. Many had already written off Venus Williams having any chance to come back before she started her impressive run in 2007. Though Venus Williams failed to impress with her performance in Australian Open 2007 and French Open 2007, she bounced back winning the Wimbledon 2007 title. Her performance in Wimbledon made her fans remember the dominance she had from 2000-2003 and she looked very strong in every match of the tournament. Though she could not go beyond semi final of U.S. Open 2007, the year was marked as an excellent one in her career.

Ana Ivanovic

This Serbian was one of the surprise performers of 2007. Making her first grand slam final appearance in the French Open, Ana Ivanović has marked the year 2007 as a breakthrough year in her career. She was very much consistent throughout the year. The world no. 4 in the WTA ranking won three WTA titles in 2007.

Ana Ivanović started the year ordinarily being defeated in the 3rd round of Australian Open. However, something better was waiting for the Serbian girl in the French Open as she reached at the final before losing to eventual champion Justine Henin. Later she went on to play the semi final of Wimbledon and 4th round of U.S. Open in 2007. So, the year 2007 has been the start of a future star of tennis.

Marion Bartoli

The 10th ranked Marion Bartoli is another player who experienced her first grand slam final in 2007 reaching at the final of Wimbledon. Moreover, this was the first time in 2007 she finished the year in top ten of WTA ranking. So, there is every reason to mark 2007 as a special year in her career. She started the year with experiencing a second round exit from the Australian Open. However, she improved her performance in the French Open as she reached the fourth round of the tournament. Then in the Wimbledon final, it was too hard for Marion Bartoli to outperform Venus Williams in the final. The French star finished the year with seeing another 4th round exit in the U.S. Open.

Anna Chakvetadze

The world no. 6, Anna Chakvetadze had an impressive year in 2007 with some career best performances. The 20 year old Russian reached the quarter final of Australian Open and French Open but could not progress beyond third round of Wimbledon. However, Anna Chakvetadze impressed her fans reaching the first ever grand slam semi final in her career in U.S. Open. With these Grand Slam successes, the Russian also won four WTA titles last year. So, if you think that she does not have the talent to win a Grand Slam title then you may get a surprise with the performance of Anna Chakvetadze this year.

Jelena Jankovic

Jelena Jankovic is another Serbian to have seen an impressive year in 2007 with four WTA titles and only second grand slam singles semi final appearance. You may argue that how she can become one of the top ten performers just reaching the semi final of a grand slam tournament. Yes, you are right in this regard. However, if you go though the performance of WTA tournaments apart from grand slam tournaments, then she had the best performance after Justine Henin.

Jelena Jankovic is now ranked no. 3 in the WTA ranking which is the outcome of her consistent performance throughout 2007. Her earliest exit from grand slam tournaments in 2007 was in Australian and Wimbledon Open where she reached 4th round. Now, it seems that if she can continue her impressive form then something better is waiting for the Serbian star.

Maria Sharapova

Well, to be honest, it was a frustrating year for this former world no. 1 being failed to win any grand slam tournament. However, the Russian star deserves a place in the top ten performers of 200 with few successes. With the time being, her performance was going down last year. Maria Sharapova started the year with losing in the Australian Open final to Serena Williams. Then, in the French Open she made it to the semi final. However, she could not even reach the quarter final of Wimbledon and U.S. Open. Besides the disappointing Grand Slam tournaments, she only managed to win a WTA title last year. She is now ranked fifth in the WTA ranking which shows her poor performance in the court.

Svetlana Kuznetsova

Though this Russian could not win any more grand slam titles last year, she one very consistent with her performances. She played the final of U.S. Open and reached the quarter final of French and Wimbledon Open. She also won the only WTA title last year at New Havana. The 2004 U.S. Open winner finished the year at the career best second place. Svetlana Kuznetsova started the year with a poor performance in the Australian Open but got her form back soon. Now, let us see what is waiting for her in 2008.

Nicole Vaidisova

This Czech tennis star is now ranked 12 in the WTA ranking. However, her performance was not that much bad which her ranking shows. She reached the semi final of the Australian Open for the first time. Despite some injury problems, she went on to play the quarter final or French Open and Wimbledon last year. However, Nicole Vaidisova could not win any WTA title in 2007. I think, it was one of the reasons of her not getting in to the top ten of WTA ranking.

The list is based on my personal choices. So, you do not need to aggress with me in this regard and you may have your own choices. So, if you have your own choices then let us know though the comment section.

Roger Federer Keen to Play on the New Surface of Australian Open

Roger Federer is eager to see the new surface of Australian Open 2008 tournament. The defending champion has recently revealed his interest to play on the Plexicushion surface, the surface to be introduced for the first time after 20 years in Australian Open. Roger Federer is the current world no. 1 in the ATP ranking and is the top most favorite to win the tournament for the fourth time. He was the champion of Australian Open for last two years.

Australianopen reported:

“Once again, I am very excited to start the new year’s Grand Slam season in Australia and to try and defend my title once again,’’ Federer said.

“I am looking forward to the new surface and especially playing in front of the Australian fans … they are some of the best fans in the world!”

Well, Roger Federer does not need to wait too long to play on this surface as the Australian Open 2008 is set to kick off from 14 January. The year 2008 can be a highlighted year for Roger Federer if he can win three of the four grand slam tournaments of this year, which will see him passing Pete Sampras’s record 14 grand slam singles title in Men’s tennis. Well, winning three grand slam tournaments in a year is undoubtedly not so easy. However, this is not a new thing for Roger Federer as he has done this for the last two years in a row.

Maria Sharapova Starts Practicing for Australian Open 2008

Maria Sharapova has already arrived Australia to take part in the first grand slam of the year, Australian Open 2008, starting from 14 January. The Russian tennis started practicing at the Rod Laver Arena soon after her arrival in Melbourne. Last year’s finalist is preparing for next week’s tournament. Today in the first practice session, she looked very serious, though was making fun often with her hitting partner and coach.

Australianopen reported:

Sharapova did not seem phased by the hot sun pouring through the open roof at Rod Laver, nor jetlag, having only arrived in Melbourne this morning after playing in a tournament in Hong Kong.

The unmistakable cries from last year’s runner-up filled the empty arena, which in less than a week will be jam packed full of fans.

The former world no. 1 could not win any Grand Slam tournament last year and her performance in other WTA tournament was not satisfactory. So, Sharapova must try her best to start the year with wining her first Australian Open title. Now, let us see how far the fifth seed can go in Australia Open 2008 tennis tournament.

Top Ten Female Players in Australian Open Tennis

If you want to get the online live score of Novak Djokovic vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga final match of Australian Open 2008 then follow the link given below:

Novak Djokovic vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: Live Score and Updates

http://techblogbiz.blogspot.com/2008/01/novak-djokovic-vs-jo-wilfried-tsonga_27.html

If you are a fan of tennis then you must know the prestige of Australian Open as a grand slam tournament in the tennis world. Well, this is one of the four grand slam tournaments of tennis. Moreover, this is one of the major sporting events of a calendar year too. So, from any point of view, Australian Open means a lot to a tennis fans. Now, Australian Open 2008 is coming nearer. Naturally, tennis players and organizers are going through a busy time now. Australia Open will start from 14 January 2007.

Ahead of the first grand slam of the year, I would like to introduce you with some of the greatest players of this tournament. I have already written an entry on Top Ten Male Players of Australian Open today. Now, I am going to write on the top ten female players of Australian Open. Well, the list of the players may not satisfy you fully but I believe that most of you will agree with me regarding this list of players of Australian Open.

Australian Open (then Australian Championship) started from 1905. The tournament has already past 100 years. So, you can guess that it is not so easy to make a list of top ten players of a competition which has already past 100 years. So, the list is mainly based on the record and statistics of the players. This is also of my personal opinion which may not satisfy you totally. However, I think, the players I included in the list deserve to get a place in the list of top ten female players of Australian Open. So, here I am giving the list of the players with short introduction for each of the players:

Margaret Smith Court

Margaret Smith Court does not need any introduction to a tennis fan. This former world no. 1 is a legendary figure in the history of tennis. With 24 grand slam singles titles under her belt, Margaret Smith Court holds the record of winning highest number of grand slam women’s singles title. Her career tally of grand slam titles is 62 including 24 singles, 19 women’s doubles and 19 mixed doubles. She is the first female tennis players in Open Era to win all of the four grand slam singles titles in the same calendar year. The year she won all four grand slam women’s singles was in 1970.

Now, when it comes to Australian Open, the record of Margaret Smith Court becomes brighter. Among her 24 grand slam singles titles, she won 11 titles in Australian Open. In fact, she won seven of them in consecutive years from 1960 to 1966. Four more Australian Open titles came in Open Era in which three came in successive years. Besides, she also won 8 doubles and 4 mixed doubles titles in Australian Open. So, you can realize how dominating she was in Australian Open throughout her career. “There has never been a tennis player to match (her)”- this is the statement of the International Tennis Hall of Fame about this greatest star of tennis.

Nancye Wynne Bolton

After Margaret Smith Court, this Australian has better success in Australian. Nancye Wynne Bolton won all of her 6 grand slam singles titles in Australian Championships. Including the 6 singles titles, she also won 10 doubles and 4 mixed doubles titles in Australian Championships, making 20 Australian Open titles in her career with just one behind Margaret Smith Court’s 21 Australian Open titles. She dominated the Australian Championships from late 30’s to late 40’s. It is true that if it were not the list of Australian Open players then Nancye Wynne Bolton might miss the list, but when it comes to Australian Open then Nancye Wynne Bolton must deserve a place even in the top three. She has been inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006 because of her contribution to tennis in her career.

Daphne Akhurst Cozens

You may also question about her inclusion in the list and her placing third in the title. Well, with five singles, five doubles and four mixed doubles titles of Australian Championships under her belt, it was impossible for me to place Daphne Akhurst Cozens lower than top five in the list. Though she has no other singles title in her career expect the five in Australian Championships, she showed her talent and skill of tennis in Australian Championships. The winner of the women’s singles title in Australian Open is now awarded with Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.

Steffi Graf

This former world no. 1 is considered as one of the greatest female tennis players. Steffi Graf won 22 grand slam singles titles in her career, second only to Margaret Smith Court’s 24 singles titles. She was world no. 1 in WTA ranking for record 377 weeks in total. With 5 feet 9 inches height, Steffi Graf dominated world tennis for more than a decade. She is the only play to win all four grand slam singles titles in a same calendar year playing in three different surfaces. Actually, the main strength of Steffi Graf was her ability to play with equal dominance in all surfaces. She also won the Olympic gold medal in singles in 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

In Australian Open, Steffi Graf won four singles titles alongside one runner-up title. Actually, her performance in three other grand slam tournaments is much better than that of Australian Open. She has 6 French Open, 7 Wimbledon and 5 U.S. Open titles in her career. So, there was hardly anything left that Steffi Graf could win in her career.

Monica Seles

She is another great female tennis player. Monica Seles started her career with huge expectations but an unexpected incidents did not let her potential flourish. In 1993, while playing a match against Magdalena Maleeva at Hamburg, Germany, Monica Seles was seriously injured by a fan named Günter Parche who hit Seles with a knife. Though the physical injury was not that much serious, but she was broken mentally causing her two years absence in the court However, with nine grand slam singles titles under her belt, she deserves to be one of the finest players in the history of tennis. Four out of her nine singles titles came at Australian Open where she showed some of her great performances.

Evonne Goolagong Cawley

This former world no. 1 Australian was one of the dominating players of 1970’s and 1980’s. In her seven grand slam singles titles, four came at Australian Open. Besides, her four Australian Open singles titles, Evonne Goolagong also won two Wimbledon and one French Open titles. However, she failed to claim any U.S. Open titles even though playing four U.S. Open final in her career. She also failed to win three more Australian Open singles titles being defeated in the final. Among her 6 Doubles titles, five came at Australian Open. So, there is enough ground to include her in the list of top ten Australian Open players.

Martina Navratilova

Martina Navratilova is another legend of tennis. She owns several prestigious records of tennis. She is one of those players who became successful in singles, doubles and mixed doubles in a row. In her 31 year long career, she won 59 grand slam titles including 18 singles titles, 31 doubles titles and 10 mixed doubles titles. Martina Navratilova is only third player to have won singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles in all four grand slam tournaments in her illustrious career. She learnt tennis to her step father in her childhood.

Martina Navratilova was most successful in Wimbledon with 9 grand slam singles titles. However, her performance in Australian Open is also very good with 3 singles titles alongside 3 runner-up titles. Moreover, she also claimed 8 doubles and mixed doubles titles in Australian Open. Considering the statistics and dominance she had in world tennis, I think, it is not possible to exclude her from this list.

Chris Evert

Christine Marie Evert is the full name of this great female tennis star. In her successful career, she won 18 singles titles in grand slam tournaments. Chris Evert won all of the four grand slam tournaments in her career. However, her career win-loss record in singles, 1309-146, shows her class and talent. What is more, she never got out at less than third round in any grand slam tournament in her career. Though she won only two singles titles at the Australian Open, she lost in four other singles finals at the Australian Open. So, I think, she deserves a place in the list of top ten female tennis players of Australian Open.

Martina Hingis

Martina Hingis is one of those players who have achieved less in their career considering their potential. Turned professional in 1994 at the age of 14, she started to dominate the tennis world from 1997, the year she won three grand slam tournaments. However, she had won a doubles titles in Wimbledon in the previous year becoming the youngest Wimbledon champion at 16. However, a ligament injury sent her out of the court and made her retire from the professional tennis at the age of 22 in 2002. However, she came back in action three years later in 2005 but she failed to regain her pace in the court and continuous injury problems forced her to declare her retirement for the second time. All of her five grand slam singles titles came before her first retirement. Three out of her five singles titles in grand slam tournament came at Australian Open. All those three came in three successive years. So, I did not think twice to include her in this list.

Serena Williams

This American is the only player of this list who is still playing professional tennis. Serena Williams is also the current champion of Australian Open. However, what made me include her in this list is her ability to dominate others and her mental will. She is such a player who can come back any time in a match without giving much time to her opponent and finally can win the match. She is one of those female tennis players who have grand slam singles titles in all of the four grand slam tournaments. However, with three Australian Open titles to her credit, she has best performance at the Australian Open so far in her career. I would not be surprised if she wins some more titles at the Australian Open as she has some more power and guile left in her to achieve more successes in grand slam tournaments.

At last, I would like to mention again that this list of players reflects my personal choices and I had to exclude many star players from this list. So, you do not need to agree with me on this regard. You may have your own list of players. I will request you, if you think any player should have included in the list then you can let us know about your opinion in the comment section.

Top Ten Male Players in Australian Open Tennis

Australian Open is one of the four grand slam tournaments in world tennis. It is also the first grad slam tournament of calendar year. First time the tournament took place was in 1905. The tournament was known as Australian Championship until the Open Era began in 1968. Naturally, the tournament experienced many great players and many historic matches in its history. As another tournament of Australian Open is approaching, the tennis fans are now eagerly waiting for some more classic matches and impressive performances. Australia Open 2008 will kick off from January 14, 2008. Now, ahead of the tournament, I have made a list of top ten male players of Australian Open.

Well, you know that making a list of top ten of anything is not so easy. I guess there is no one who has seen all the great players of Australian Open playing in the tournament in his or her lifetime. So, the list of top ten male players of Australian Open is mainly based on their record and statistical success of the players in Australian Open. The list is made on the basis of my personal opinion. Here, I am giving the list of players with a short introduction for each of the players:

Roy Emerson

This Australian is undoubtedly the most influential player of Australian Open so far. Roy Emerson holds the record of winning highest number of Men Singles titles in Australian Open with 6 championship titles alongside a runner up trophy. Though he has won most of his grand slam titles before the start of Open Era when only the amateur players were allowed to play in the grand slam tournament, you can hardly claim any question regarding his greatness as a tennis player. Former greats like Rod Laver, Arthur Ashe were among his contemporaries and many of his grand slam titles came through defeating these two greats in the final.

All of his major successes came from 1961 to 1967. You can term it Golden Time of Roy Emerson’s career Out of 12 grand slam singles titles, Emerson won six grand slam singles titles in Australian Open. He won five successive men’s singles titles in Australian Open from 1963-1967. I think, this is enough to make you understand the dominance he had in Australian Open that time.

Ken Rosewall

The name comes after Roy Emerson when it comes to Australian Open is Ken Rosewall. This former world no. 1 was one of the two best players of his time. Trained by his father, he grew up with an effective backhand that later emerged as his best strength. To many, Ken Rosewall’s backhand is one of the best of all time. With four Australian Open titles, he is obviously one of the most successful players of Australian Open. He also had a long career from efarly 50’s to early 70’s and he played with sheer consistency throughout his career. Besides four titles in Australian Open, this great Australian tennis player also won two French Open and U.S. Open titles in his career.

Andre Agassi

Andre Agassi is another great player of tennis with eight grand slam titles to his credit. However, most of his success came in Australian Open as he won four of his eight grand slam titles in Australian Open. Well, this is just a mare record and it does not reveal much about his dominance in Australian Open. From 2000-2003, he won three Australian Open titles though his first title came five years earlier. According to TENNIS Magazine, Andre Agassi is ranked 7 in the list of greatest male players from 1965 to 2005. The former world no. 1 also has Olympic Gold medal to his credit. With some physical problems Andre Agassi retired from tennis last year.

Rod Laver

He is another great Australian tennis player. Let me give you just two things to make you understand the greatness of Rod Laver. 1. He was world no. 1 for seven successive years. 2. He is the only male tennis players who won all of the four grand slam titles twice. Well, if these are not enough to you then note that he is the only male tennis player who won calendar year grand slam in Open Era. He also has the same feat before the Open Era as well. So, you have no chance to deny his greatness. Actually, he is considered to be the greatest male tennis players of all time with 11 grand slam singles title in his career.

Rod Laver as a player is successful in all of the grand slam tournaments. So, it is a bit hard to mention his record in Australian Open particularly. However, with three Australian Open singles titles, he is considered as one of the greatest player of Australian Open. What made me surprised is that despite a successful career in men’s singles, Rod Laver had no title in doubles. However, it does not lessen greatness in world tennis.

Mats Wilander

This Swedish former world no. 1 is another greatest player Australian Open got. Among 7 grand slam titles, Mats Wilander has won three grand slam singles titles in Australian Open. The year 1988 was the most successful one in hi career as he won three grand slam titles in that year. However, Mats Wilander did not win any other grand slam titles after 1988. Except Wimbledon, he won the men’s singles titles of other three grand slam tournaments in his career. After turning professional in 1981, he played consistently well until his retirement from professional tennis in 1996.

Roger Federer

Roger Federer is perhaps the widely known name in the world tennis today. He is the only player of this list who is currently playing professional tennis. No doubt, with 12 grand slam titles so far in his career, he has already become a legend in the history of tennis. He is now just two grand slam titles away to touch Pete Sampras’s record 14 grand slam singles title.

Roger Federer is the present world no. 1 and he is now dominating the tennis world winning almost everything in his way. So far, he has won three titles in Australian Open including the title of last year. So, he still has lots of years ahead of him to win many more titles in Australian Open as well in other grand slam tournaments.

Jack Crawford

This former world no. 1 won four of his six grand slam titles in Australian Championships. Besides, he also lost in the final of Australian Championships three times. So, Jack Crawford is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever players played in Australian Open. He also won four doubles and three mixed doubles titles of Australian Open. He has singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles in Australian Championships, French Championships and Wimbledon Championships. However, this Australian great never won any titles in U.S. Open.

Adrian Quist

This Australian is one of the greatest players of Australian Open with three singles titles to his credit. However, Adrian Quis is widely known for his doubles titles. He along with John Bromwich won eight successive Australia Open titles from 1936-1950 (the tournament did not held due to WWII from 1941-1945). Expect three Australian Open singles titles; Adrian Quist did not win any other grand slam singles titles in his career. However, he won doubles titles in all other grand slam tournaments. He is one of the few players who won “Career Doubles Slams”.

Stefan Edberg

In his eight year-long career, Stefan Edberg has confirmed a place for him in the history of world tennis. Winning six grand slam titles, he is now considered as one of the greatest players of all time in world tennis. If you go through his whole career then you can see that he never won more than one grand slam titles in his career. However, it does not mean that he ahs done everything in he was inconsistent in his career. Actually besides six grand slam titles he has five runner-up titles as well. He had to face strong challenges from some of the great contemporary players like Boris Becker, Ivan Lendl, Jim Courier throughout his career. Among his six career titles, he won two grand slam titles in Australian Open. Except French Open, Stefan Edberg also won Wimbledon and U.S. Open twice in his career.

Ivan Lendl

This great male tennis player is considered as one of the finest ever players in the history of tennis. Ivan Lendl won eight grand slam titles in his career alongside 11 runner-up titles. Thus, he holds the record of playing highest number of grand slam finals in men’s singles. In total, he appeared in the grand slam titles 19 times. He is one of the ten greatest tennis players since 1966 according to TENNIS magazine. He faced a lot of challenges from the former great players like John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg and Boris Becker. Actually, I think, he would have won much more grand slam titles in his career if he were not in professional tennis that time.

Among his eight grand slam titles, Ivan Lendl won only twice in Australian Open. However, he was also the runner-up of 1983 and 1991 Australian Open. However, still his performance in Australian Open deserves to get a place in the list of top ten male players of Australian Open.

Well, I earlier mention that this list of players is based mainly on their career record and this is of my personal choices. So, you do not need to agree with this list, though I believe that the list will satisfy many of you. To tell the truth, I had to exclude some great players like John Bromwich, John David Newcombe etc. from this list.

Australian Open Tennis 2008: Some Reflections

Australian Open tennis is one of the four grand slam tournaments of tennis. Among the four grand slam tournaments, Australian Open is held first. The tournament takes place at the Melbourne Park on January every year. The leading tennis players across the world participate in the competition in both singles and doubles category. In singles category, there are events for men, women as well as for boys and girls. There is an additional event called ‘mixed’ in doubles category besides the events for men, women, boys and girls.

Now, there is only 32 days left before Australian Open 2008 kicks off on 14 January 2008. This year, Australian Open matches will be held on the Plexicushion surface which is different from Rebound Ace surface where the tournament was held for the last 20 years. With its features, the new surface is very similar to US Open surface DecoTurf. So, it is expected that the players will experience a faster surface in Australian open this year.

Australia Open was first introduced in 1905 under the name of Australian Championship. The tournament was held on grass court at Kooyong. However, the venue was shifted to the then Flinders Park, known as Melbourne Park now. It was until 1968, the launching year of Open era, only top ranked amateur player could take part in this competition. However, Australian Championship turned into Australian Open since the start of Open Era in 1968. With this historic change, Australian Open has become more open for the tennis players in the world.

The tournament is held mainly on Rod Laver Arena and Vodafone Arena. Rod Laver Arena is named after legendary tennis star Rod Laver. It has seating capacity of 14820. Vodafone Arena has seating arrangement for 11000 fans. Australian Open has a long history in the tennis world. With lots of tennis legends winning lots of historic matches, Australian Open has become one of the most popular sports events in the world. The winner of the women’s singles is awarded with Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup which is named after legendary Australian former tennis player Daphne Akhurst. Norman Brookes Challenge Cup is given to the winner of men’s singles. The trophy is named after another Australian legendary player Norman Brookes.

Roger Federer is the current champion of Australian Open Men’s Singles whereas Serena Williams is the winner of women’s singles. No doubt, Roger Federer is the most favorite to win the Australian Open 2008 title as well. He has 12 grand slam titles to his credit and at this moment he is ranked no. 1 in the ranking of ATP. Federer won the last two Australian Open men’s singles titles. So, the title of Australian Open 2008 will be his third consecutive title. Moreover, Federer needs two more grand slam titles to level the Pete Sampras’s record highest 14 grand slam titles. So, it seems to be a significant year to come for Roger Federer. However, he might face strong challenge from Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic.

In women’s singles, there is no single player who is currently dominating over others. Rather, there are some players who are winning the tournaments these days. Justine Henin, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, maria Sharapova are in the lost of favorites to win the women’s singles title of Australian Open 2008. Any of them can win the title of this year as all of them have the quality and skill to prove their worth.

Australian Open 2008 is now the main attraction in the tennis world. Tennis fans are eagerly waiting for this tournament. Naturally, when it comes to grand slam tournament, tennis fans feel additional excitement in them and want to enjoy the fullest of it. Not only the fans, participating in a grand slam or winning a grand slam is a dream to many players. So, let us see if Australian Open 2008 becomes a story of ‘dream comes true’ for a player. I hope to see an interesting tournament with some historic matches in Australian Open 2008 tournament.
