National Football League (NFL) has two conferences- American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC). Each of the conferences consists of four four-team divisions, thus including 32 teams in the whole league. The divisions are named with East, West, North and South.

Each of the 32 teams of NFL play 16 matches in the regular season. Each of the teams plays against other teams of that division twice; once in home and another in away. In addition to this six matches, every team in the competition play 10 more matches including four matches against the teams of a particular division of that conference and four more against the teams of a particular division of other conference. Two other matches are assigned by NFL considering the team’s standing in the previous season.

From each of the conferences, six teams enter into the NFL Playoff rounds including four divisional champions and two wildcard teams. The two wild card teams are those who have better record in that conference compared to the other teams, except the four divisional champions of the conference. So, 12 teams get into the NFL Playoff round after the end of the regular season. NFL Playoff round is a knockout stage where only the winning teams progresses to the next round. There are three rounds in NFL Playoff including wildcard round, divisional round and conference championship though which two conference champions are decided who later on take part in the Super Bowl competition.
