Arsenal vs Birmingham City: Latest Updates

http://football-cricket.blogspot.com/2008/01/arsenal-vs-birmingham-city-latest.html

Arsenal will host Birmingham City on Saturday in the fist premiership match day after a week off. Arsenal leads the point table with 50 points to their credit, though they are within two points of defending champion Manchester Untied. Birmingham City, on the other hand, is struggling in the league with 19 points and stands 16th in the league point table. Though they are out of relegation zone at this moment, they are not out of danger either as they are within 2 points of Sunderland.

Now, the pragmatic situation for Arsenal and Birmingham City is different. Arsenal is going towards another championship title, while Birmingham needs to ensure their survival in the premier league. Arsenal can not afford any more slip up as they maintain a narrow different with Manchester Untied in the league table. So, they will be eager for victory. Birmingham City will try their best to earn at least a point from the match, which will also boost up their confidence level.

The Recent Performance of Arsenal and Birmingham City

Comparing the recent form of both the sides, Arsenal seems to be favorite in the match against Birmingham City. Arsenal won four out of last five premier league matches alongside a draw. Arsenal has projected a superb 2-0 victory against Burnley in the third round match of FA Cup this week with some key players giving rest. However, Arsenal will face Tottenham Hotspur in the first of two legged semi final of Carling Cup before then take on Birmingham City. In contrast, Birmingham City experienced two defeats, two draw and a win in their last five premier league matches. What is more, the side has got the last blow though a humiliating FA Cup third round defeat to Huddersfield Town. So, no doubt, Birmingham City will not be able to inspire themselves from their recent performances ahead of the upcoming clash with Arsenal.

Squad of Arsenal and Birmingham City

Arsenal is missing some of their key players who are out to represent their nations in the African Nations Cup. Kolo Touré, Alexandre Song and Emmanuel Eboué will not be available for Arsenal up to five weeks depending on the progress of their countries in the continental tournament of Africa. So, it will be very hard for Arsenal to cope up with the situation missing three important players at this crucial stage of premier league. However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident to cope up with it.

Reuters reported:

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he is confident of coping with the loss of his African contingent, although he is probably relieved that striker Emmanuel Adebayor's Togo failed to qualify.

"We will not go into the transfer market even though we are losing two centre backs," Wenger told the BBC, although he admitted the added loss of Song was a blow. "I only found that out yesterday so that's bad news."

Arsenal has good news as well. There is news that two forwards Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott are ready to come back with the Carling Cup match. So, it is obvious that both the forwards will be available for the match against Birmingham City.

Arsenalpies reported:

Up front, Robin van Persie is set for his comeback, while Theo Walcott is also available. Emmanuel Adebayor is apparently struggling with a hamstring injury, but Nicklas Bendtner and Eduardo are both in scoring mood, so my bet would be on an RvP and Eduardo pairing, with either Walcott or Bendtner making an appearance for the Dutchman after an hour or so.

For Birmingham City, Sebastian Larsson, Mikael Forssell and Rafael Schmitz are expected to play a big role. However, if they can not play as a team against Arsenal then they will have to face some scary moments at the Arsenal home ground.

Well, it is apparent that Arsenal is likely to win the match. However, Birmingham City has a balanced side and if they can show an inspired performance then they may get at least one point from the match. However, considering the Arsenal’s form in both home and away, it is very hard to bet on Birmingham City.
