Joe Calzaghe Named BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Undisputed super middleweight champion, Joe Calzaghe has been awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. This star boxer from Wales was also one of the finalists last year, but failed to win the award. However, this year in his way to win the BBC award he has surpassed Formula 1 racing driver Lewis Hamilton and another boxer Ricky Hatton. Moreover, his father cum coach, Enzo Calzaghe has won the BBC Coach of the Year title this year.

Joe Calzaghe has already been a legend in the boxing world. He has been super middleweight world champion for last ten years. Thus, he has made the record of holding the title of any weight class for highest number of years in the boxing world. Terming it as a tremendous achievement, Joe Calzaghe has said that he is very of this honor. For the last two years, he has been one of the most successful boxers in the world.

In the award giving ceremony, some of former legends of British sports were present. Former footballer Sir Bobby Robson was awarded with BBC 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award for his tribute to football.

It is interesting that two boxers were in the top three. It shows the current stature of British boxing. At this moment, there are seven world boxing champions from Britain in different weight divisions. So, I guess some more British boxers will follow the feat of Joe Calzaghe in the years to come.
